Taylor Eats: SoCo Brooklyn

Perched on Myrtle Avenue, right between Ryerson and Grand Streets in Brooklyn, sits SoCo Restaurant serving southern fusion cuisine. Draped in an all black sleek looking facade with a regal cornice crowning the windows, Soco definitely has curb appeal. I love when businesses keep that historical Brooklyn feel while adding a modern design touch. The Interior certainly does not disappoint either. Exposed brick walls, stainless steel counters with wood accents. I love it! So warm and welcoming.

I arrived at Soco at 2 pm on a Tuesday afternoon. I was greeted by the host and seated right away. The atmosphere was very relaxed and old school R&B was playing in the background. Not too loud and not too overwhelming. You should be aware that SoCo serves lunch from 12-3:30 pm and serves dinner from 5:30-10:30 pm. But the great thing about SoCo is that they remain open during the transition time. So no worries if you arrive a little early for dinner, you can still enjoy happy hour at the bar and snack on wings or other appetizers while you wait!

I ordered the blackened salmon served with garlic tossed string beans, pickled pineapple salsa, and citrus mashed sweet potatoes. Can you say mouth watering? I am happy to report that the salmon was perfectly cooked. It was moist and tender inside, just the way I like it. No dry over-cooked salmon here. The garlic tossed string beans were fresh, crunchy and well seasoned. Last but certainly not least, the citrus mashed sweet potatoes were simply DELICIOUS! I think they were my favorite part of the dish. I have southern roots so when I think about sweet potatoes, I think about the kind my grandma makes which are delicious as well but more dense and super sweet! Soco’s sweet potatoes tastes like light fluffy clouds of sweet potatoes not overwhelmed with sweetness. I’m sorry but that’s the best that I can do to describe them. You’re going to have to try the citrus mashed sweet potatoes for yourself to really understand.

Since I gave up alcohol for lent (oh the struggle), I decided to try the Ginger Beer. (FYI – Ginger Beer does not contain alcohol according to FDA standards). I must say that it was very tasty. Because my meal was so satisfying, I honestly didn’t miss having a cocktail. Thanks SoCo!

This restaurant goes on my list of Brooklyn Favs. I can’t wait to return to SoCo for dinner. I heard that their shrimp and grits is amazing!
